Traditional Hungarian Christmas menu

In Hungary, maybe the most important family event is Christmas. Family members come together: brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents, cousins spend together an event or a day having traditional local Christmas meals.

Maybe the most popular meal this time is Hungarian fish soup. Each family has its own recipe, but originally there are two main fish soup styles in Hungary: the Szeged and Baja style from their origin. Szeged style is thicker, the Baja style contains pasta.

In many families stuffed cabbage comes to the Christmas table, which is spicy minced meat rolled in soured cabbage leaves, added extra smoked pig neck or sausage. This type of cabbage souring is unique in the world made only with salt with pushing down the cabbage for some weeks. People often eat it with sour cream and fresh sourdough bread.

In other families wiener schnitzel is the main dish, or carp in breadcrumbs. In our family the main dish is whole carp laid on potato slides with tomato and paprika: Rácponty.

Regarding the dessert the most popular Hungarian Christmas sweety is bejgli, which is rolled dough with poppy seed or nut filling.
